You Are Not Your 'Diet'

I think when people embark on any kind of nutrition protocol sometimes they let it define them.

Like “hi Sue whatchya eating there?” “Oh y’know I’ve gone *insert diet name* so I’m just having a little snack of gluten free dairy free non gmo probiotic alkalised dirt”

Sue is identifying her life choices now as being being part of something much greater than just a small reduction in calories.

If Sue was then to eat something not on the “allowed” list of foods she might feel as though she’d screwed up.

Unfortunately eliminating foods unnecessarily doesn’t help with the whole “being on and off the wagon” scenario.

Firstly you can’t mess up. Secondly you can’t fall off said wagon. You are not off track. There is no track and there is no wagon. Lets eliminate the off and on of this situation and remember whatever happens you are still very much ON.

*treads carefully* And hey if that diet works well for you I’m not going to say don’t do it - I’m going to say if it’s causing you stress then maybe don’t.

The problem with the situation where we let our diet define us is that we seem to think that by slightly going over our allotted amount ("OFF DIET") we go in to “ah screw it” mode. We feel like we’ve failed when actually the requirements are just vastly unrealistic.

There’s a common quote that I relay a lot when it comes to this and that is: If you had a puncture in one of your tyres, you wouldn’t go and puncture the other 3?

Its exactly the same when you have a bit too much of a big portion or an extra biscuit at work but sometimes can be more likely when we have tonnes of rules.

This is why I really like looking at your nutrition plan as “service as usual”. At the end of the day should you already be getting a good amount of high nutrient food with some fun stuff sprinkled here and there - it is literally just a small reduction in the quantity to facilitate enough weight loss.

To be honest you deserve so much more than Dr Guru’s Detox of elimination of everything except 3 alkalised almonds once when there is a full moon.
